ABOUT

Travelling is a passion for so many people. I spend every day through the lens of travel adventure in our hometown of Cairns and share my love for and knowledge of Cairns with visitors and locals so that they have a richer experience of Cairns.
Peter Schleifer will be your guide through Cairns, whether it's history, culture, food or hipster.
Meet Your Guide
Hi, I’m Peter Schleifer, the owner and guide behind Cairns Urban Walking Tours. I created these tours to share my genuine passion for Cairns — its rich history, colourful street art, vibrant food culture, and the wonderful mix of people who give this city its unique character.

After many years of calling Cairns home, I’ve come to know its hidden laneways, untold stories, and local gems that most visitors never stumble across. My tours are about slowing down, taking in the details, and really feeling the rhythm of the city.

Whether we’re exploring heritage buildings, tasting tropical flavours, or admiring a new mural, I love connecting with travellers, swapping stories, and helping people see Cairns from a more local and personal perspective.

Popular Questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • How long do the walking tours take, and how difficult are they?

Our walking tours take between 1.5 and 2 hours at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for stories, photos, and refreshments. Cairns is flat and easy to walk, so our tours are suitable for all fitness levels. Comfortable shoes, a hat, and a bottle of water are recommended.

  • What should I bring for the tour?

Cairns’ tropical weather can be warm and humid, so bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and water. For morning tours, light clothing is ideal; for afternoon or evening tours, consider insect repellent. Don’t forget your camera — there are plenty of great photo spots along the way!

  • Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is necessary, as group sizes are kept small to maintain a personal experience (usually no more than 12 guests). You can easily book online through our website, or contact us directly if you have special requests or would like to arrange a private tour.

  • What happens if it rains?

Cairns weather can be unpredictable! Our tours go ahead rain or shine, as most of the routes include shaded areas or partial shelter. If heavy rain or unsafe weather is expected, we’ll contact you in advance to offer rescheduling or a refund. A light rain jacket or umbrella is a good idea in the wet season (December–March).

  • What makes Cairns Urban Walking Tours different from other tours?

Our tours are all about small groups, local stories, and genuine experiences. Each walk is led by a passionate local guide who knows Cairns inside and out — from its colonial history to its modern street art and food culture. You’ll see the city through local eyes, not just from a brochure.
